FAQs

How secure is the yurt? Very! Orkney has one of the lowest crime rates in the UK and is exceptionally peaceful, but peace of mind is important. The door is secured with an all weather padlock.

Is there power in the yurt? No. Cooking is done on either the wood-burning stove or the camping stove and light is provided by the kerosene storm lamps.

How many does the yurt sleep? Up to eight. Four can sleep on the double futon and two single futons. However, a further four beds can be made up with the bed-in-a-bag mattresses and memory-foam mattress toppers provided.

Is the yurt suitable for children? Children of all ages are welcome in the yurt and really enjoy it, but parents must bear in mind that the stove can become very hot when lit and that a road, however quiet, needs to be crossed to reach the shower block. As parents ourselves, we have found that yurts are a fabulous place for children to stay, so long as they are supervised.

Can we bring our dog? I'm afraid not. The campsite owners have regretfully decided not to allow dogs after an 'incident' involving sausage theft, and those staying in the yurt must abide by the general campsite rules.

Where are the nearest shops/restaurants? There is a small grocery store only a few hundred yards up the road in Evie village itself, and several more in Finstown roughly 8 miles away. Kirwall, roughly 15 miles from the campsite, has a number of supermarkets including a large Tesco, Lidl and Co-op, and is also a good place to find smaller shops selling local meats, fish, cheeses etc. There are also a several restaurants, take-away outlets and pubs.

Are there midges on Orkney? Thankfully very few! I have seen one or two in the warmest summers, but Orkney's flat, coastal landscape and frequent breezes means they do not flourish there, so you will not have your days and evenings ruined by the little pests.
